Eldon Terrace was originally built in the early 1890’s by Lord Eldon as accommodation for his workers at the railway. The railway was operated by the London & South Western Railway Company and was used for conveying visitors to the seaside and also for the transport of Purbeck stone via a stone yard at Swanage, and ball clay via sidings at Furzebrook and Eldon. Easter Cottage, being the end cottage and therefore slightly larger, was allocated to Lord Eldon's Steward and remained as a part of the family estate until 1926 when it was sold by his Trustees for the princely sum of £300. Now forming part of the Northern boundary of Swanage’s Conservation area, Eldon Terrace has received a Grade II listing as “A fine example of late Victorian estate housing".
We purchased Easter Cottage in 1990 and opened our doors as a Bed & Breakfast in the spring of 1991. Since then we have lovingly and tastefully refurbished the cottage working closely with 'Visit Britain' Assessors, and following guest suggestions, to offer a high class of accommodation with all the modern amenities, whilst striving to maintain the charm and character of the building and retaining a warm and homely ambience.
At Easter Cottage, we are very proud of our
outstanding record in the town's annual Swanage in Bloom Competition. In
the twenty-one year history of the competition, we have won the 'Best Overall
Business Shield' twice and in the 'Best Holiday Accommodation' category; we
have been 1st three times, 2nd nine times and 3rd four times!
Not a bad record considering we weren't around to enter for the first
three years of the competition's history! And, it goes without saying, we
have been photographed by hundreds!
